If you're not into trucks, you might not know that there's plenty more than the Ford F-150 pickup. An entire Super Duty series is prepared to take on heavy duty work loads, as well as a commercial vehicle line that's even tougher than those. The largest non-commercial truck Ford makes is the Ford F-450: it's unapologetically big, bold, and brawny. In this preview guide, we'll look at this Super Duty heavyweight and tell you what's new and what it can do.
WHAT'S DIFFERENT ABOUT THE FORD F-450?
The Ford F-450 is the top of the line for the Ford F-series Super Duty trucks and it's all about the jaw-dropping utility. You might be impressed with the F-150's 8,000-pound towing capacity and 2,300-pound payload capacity. Or the F-150's 450 horsepower and 510 pounds per foot of torque but that's chump change compared to what the Ford F-450 can do.
The 2022 model of the Ford F-450 is only a foot and a half longer than the Ford F-150, but the other differences are big. Properly equipped, the F-450 can tow an astounding 24,200 pounds and haul an equally impressive 6,270 pounds. That's thanks to the F-450's 6.7-liter turbodiesel V8 engine, which generates 475 horsepower, equal to the F-150's engine and an outstanding 1,050 pounds per foot of torque. Just goes to show that not all Ford trucks are the same.
WHAT'S NEW FOR 2022?
Now that we have a handle on what the Ford F-450 is, let's look at what's unique to the 2022 model. Super Duty trucks had an overhaul in 2017 (when Ford introduced a military-grade aluminum alloy to the body to make the trucks lighter) but now it’s the F-150’s turn. With focus directed towards a full makeover for the F-150, the 2022 F-250, F-350 and F-450 will only see some slight tweaks in interior and exterior coloring, appearance packages and a 12.0-inch touchscreen.
WHAT TRIM LEVELS AND OPTIONS ARE THERE?
Except for the small changes listed in the previous section, the trim levels remain unchanged. That means there's still plenty to choose from. There's six trim levels (XL, XLT, Lariat, Ranch, Platinum, and Limited), three cab configurations (regular, supercab, or crew), two engine options (6.7-liter V8 Turbo Diesel or 6.2-liter 2-Valve Gas V8 FFV). We tried figuring out how many potential combinations that is, but let's just say it's a very big number. With options this plentiful, you really can get exactly the kind of Ford F-450 that you want.
There aren't very many changes to the Ford F-450 in 2022 but for a truck as mercilessly powerful as this one, staying the course sounds pretty good. With tons of possible combinations of options, we're pretty confident you'll find a truck you just love.
