If you like the Ford FIesta, sit up and listen. Because 2019 is the last model year you can buy this subcompact car in the USA. That's right, the Fiesta is headed for sunny shores and foreign markets, but there's still an opportunity to buy this Ford sedan or hatchback before the Fiesta disappears forever. In this preview guide, we discuss what makes buying the Fiesta a smart move and what's new in this, its last model year.
What's New for 2019?
The Fiesta is closing up shop and taking the party elsewhere. And the first thing to go was the hatchback's base S trim, along with the luxurious Titanium trim. But before the Fiesta goes, Ford leaves us with a parting gift. The new Fiesta ST-Line trim reinvigorates the lineup with sporty styling on the standard Fiesta. This upper-trim Fiesta comes with Shadow Black exterior accents, cloth sport seats, race-inspired aluminum pedals, and leather-wrapped steering wheel with red accent stitching along with keyless entry keypad, ambient lighting, and upgraded SYNC3 infotainment system with added USB port, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and satellite radio.
Nimble as Ever
One thing is for sure: the front-wheel-drive Fiesta is one of the most fun cars to drive in its class. That's due to its precise steering and sport-tuned suspension system. We really liked the grippy, double-rimmed steering wheel with a sports car feel. You'll really love long winding roads. And because of its powerful engines, you'll enjoy on ramps and the passing lane as well.
To get things started, there's a 120-horsepower 1.6-liter inline-4 engine that serves as the Fiesta's base. This engine comes with a standard gratifying five-speed manual transmission, or an optional six-speed dual-clutch automatic. If you're in the market for something sporty, there's the performance-oriented 197-horsepower turbocharged EcoBoost engine with six-speed manual transmission in the Fiesta ST. That'll make your commute feel a bit more like the Indy 500.
Intuitive Infotainment
The 2019 Ford Fiesta offers the SYNC3 infotainment system, available on the SE trim and standard on everything above that. This system is easy to learn and quick to respond to commands. There's also the SYNC system that comes with voice activation, Bluetooth, and 4.2-inch display, but we recommend upgrading to the SYNC3, which includes 6.5-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and second USB port.
Overall, the Fiesta's cabin controls are well-designed and intuitive. Everything from physical knobs for volume to the cruise control on the steering wheel make sense and feel right. Everything is labeled and rules out guesswork.
The 2019 Ford Fiesta might be on its way out but there's still an opportunity to get a new model that will last years. If you're interested in the ST trim, this is a rare chance. Because there was no ST trim in 2018 or earlier. And there won't be one after 2019. If you want a peppy sedan with intuitive technology and superb handling, act fast. This car won't be here this time next year.
