With everything they have in common, the 2022 Ford F-150 and 2022 Toyota Tundra can offer a tough choice. But don’t worry, because we’re here to help you choose the best light-duty truck for your unique daily drive.
Starting Price: 2022 Ford F-150
If you want to save money on a work truck, the F-150 is the right choice, thanks to its starting MSRP of $31,520. If you choose, however, you can climb the six F-150 trim models for greater interior comfort.
The 2022 Toyota Tundra starts at $35,950, forcing you to spend more, whether or not you’re shopping for frills. The Tundra offers seven trim models, so you can also choose a more luxurious option if you prefer.
Interior Luxuries: It’s a Tie!
Although the 2022 Ford F-150 starts at a lower price, these trucks deliver many of the same base features. Standard items include an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen and smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Both trucks include forward collision mitigation on every trim level.
As you move up each truck’s trim models, you’ll find similar offerings. For example, both trucks offer leather upholstery and heated and ventilated front seats. Other upscale offerings include upgraded LED lights, premium audio systems, and panoramic sunroofs.
Powertrain Options: 2022 Ford F-150
The F-150 has a much wider range of engine options, making it the best truck for drivers with towing and hauling work that needs doing. Compared to the base engine, the turbo 2.7-liter V6 increases both power and fuel economy. For maximum efficiency (up to 25 mpg combined), choose the PowerBoost hybrid engine. The V8 will help you haul max payloads. Meanwhile, the turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 is the right choice for drivers who want to tow max loads.
Choose from these six F-150 engine options:
- 3.3-liter V6 (290 horsepower, 265 pound-feet of torque)
- Turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 (325 hp, 400 lb-ft)
- 5.0L V8 (400 hp, 410 lb-ft)
- Turbo 3.5L V6 (400 hp, 500 lb-ft)
- High-output turbo 3.5L V6 (450 hp, 510 lb-ft) (Raptor models only)
- Turbo PowerBoost hybrid 3.5L V6 (430 hp, 570 lb-ft)
There are only two engine available for the 2022 Toyota Tundra. Lower trim models feature the standard turbocharged V6 engine. Optional for the Limited, Platinum, and 1794 Edition trims, and standard on the TRD Pro and Capstone models is the more powerful hybrid V6. This hybrid isn’t quite as efficient as its F-150 counterpart, earning up to 22 mpg combined.
There are two 2022 Toyota Tundra engines:
- Turbo 3.5L V6 (389 hp, 479 lb-ft)
- Turbo hybrid 3.5L V6 (437 hp, 583 lb-ft)
Rugged Capabilities: 2022 Ford F-150
Both light-duty trucks offer their own special, off-road-ready trim model. For the F-150, that’s the Raptor. Not only does this truck come standard with trail-specific hardware, including adaptive Fox shock absorbers and advanced four-wheel drive with low-range gearing, but it also improves your ride with a high-performance version of the turbo 3.5-liter V6 (450 horsepower, 510 lb-ft of torque).
The TRD Pro is a close second place. Like the Raptor, it includes all-terrain tires, skid plates, a locking rear differential, and Fox suspension dampers. The Tundra is also pretty powerful, thanks to the hybrid version of the Tundra’s turbo V6.
However, we prefer the Raptor’s Terrain Management system (with seven selectable drive modes: Slippery, Tow/Haul, Sport, Normal, Off-Road, Baja, and Rock Crawl) over the TRD Pro’s crawl control and multi-terrain select systems to help you get through situations with minimal traction.
The Best Truck for Your Drive
In the end, whether you’re building the perfect work truck, a luxury cruiser, or an off-road warrior, the 2022 Ford F-150 is the best choice!
