Both the 2021 Ford Edge and Jeep Renegade balance sporty utility with smooth-riding comfort and are also known for their excellent tech interfaces and comfort-inducing options. How can anyone decide between them? Cue our comparison guide.
Maximum Comfort: 2021 Ford Edge
As a midsize crossover, the Edge can’t help but be roomier than the subcompact Renegade. This of course makes the Edge the ultimate choice for families on the go. Your carpool buddies will also appreciate the extra rear-seat legroom.
Although the Renegade isn’t as big as the Edge, the two models go pound-for-pound in terms of comfort and upscale features. Seating contours in each crossover offer long-term comfort, and options like heated seats and leather upholstery pile on the luxury.
Street-Smart Technology: 2021 Ford Edge
The Ford Edge comes standard with everything a technophile could want, including complete smartphone integration with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Ford’s Sync 3 infotainment system also comes at no extra cost. You’ll love its new 12.1-inch touchscreen interface and dual USB ports. As you move up the Edge trim hierarchy you’ll find even more to like, including an upgraded sound system, rotary gear shift dial and a hands-free liftgate.
Unlike with the Edge, the base Renegade doesn’t come standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. However, this smartphone technology – along with Jeep’s Uconnect infotainment system – can be added to the base model with the Unconnect 7.0 Group package. Other models come standard with this bundle of gadgets.
Best Off-Road Performance: 2021 Jeep Renegade
Like its Jeep brethren, the Renegade was built for off-road performance. There are a few different four-wheel-drive systems available, so shoppers can choose their own adventure. The special Trailhawk trim comes standard with everything you need to travel through the elements, including all-terrain tires, four-wheel drive with low-range gearing, and underbody skid plates.
With its optional all-wheel-drive performance gear, the Edge will improve traction on wet pavement. It’ll even help you keep your footing on light trails. However, the Edge isn’t quite as adventurous as the Renegade.
Friendliest Commuter: 2021 Ford Edge
The Renegade might excel in off-road terrain but back on the pavement, it’s the Edge you’ll want. This crossover’s smooth, capable cruise is your friend on lengthy commutes and road trips alike. When you’re in need of extra speed, the Edge is quick to comply, boosting confidence during highway merging and passing maneuvers.
By comparison, the Jeep Renegade’s throttle response leaves a little something to be desired. Jeep’s nine-speed automatic transmission simply doesn’t live up to Ford’s eight-speed version, taking a bit too long to give drivers the extra power they crave.
The Renegade has big off-road chops, but the 2021 Ford Edge is the all-around winner. This midgrade crossover treats you to a smooth commute, comfortable cabin, and the best on-road infotainment you could ask for.
