The Lariat and King Ranch trim levels of the Ford F-150 straddle the divide between capability and luxury. Which one you buy depends on how much you want to be pampered. Either way, you get a powerful beast of burden to do your heavy hauling and towing.
POWER AND PERFORMANCE
The Lariat comes standard with the twin-turbo 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine, delivering 325 horsepower and towing up to 7,600 pounds when properly configured. If that's not enough, the 5-liter Ti-VCT V-8 engine and 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost engine are available as upgrades.
No upgrade needed when you buy the King Ranch model. This trim comes standard with a V8, 5-liter engine that makes 395 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. This improved engine tows up to 4,000 pounds more than the 2.7-liter offering on the Lariat.
COMFORT AND TECH FEATURES
You can definitely sit comfortably in the Lariat, which has leather upholstery and power-adjustable heated and ventilated front seats. When you look at the center console for tech options, you'll find satellite radio and the SYNC 3 infotainment system housed on a 12-inch display touchscreen.
The King Ranch takes comfort and convenience to a new level. Passengers can sit snugly with heated rear seats. A Bang & Olufsen audio system and a voice-activated touch-screen navigation system, remote start, and heated leather-wrapped steering wheel with memory make driving a truly luxurious experience.
SAFETY AND SECURITY
The Lariat comes equipped with airbags and rear view camera, scoring high in crash test safety ratings. If you're looking for more safety options, you'll find them in the King Ranch. The F-150 King Ranch has curve control, a post-crash alert system, and optional blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert and inflatable safety belts in the second row.
STYLE
The Lariat interior is nice, with stitched leather upholstery in various color schemes. The newest option for Lariat buyers is an attractive tan-over-mocha. On the face of the F-150 Lariat, you'll find a chrome two-bar style grille with four minor bars, black surround, and background mesh.
The King Ranch has the same chrome two-bar style grille but drops the four minor bars and replaces them with a caribou mesh insert. The interior is downright luxurious, with a very unique style--reddish brown over dark mottled brown--and stamped distinctive design on its leather seats and elsewhere in the cabin.
TAKEAWAY
The Lariat is plenty of truck for most buyers. It's affordable without being too bare bones, the way lower trims might feel. Those looking for a luxury truck experience will likely want to opt for the King Ranch.
