Which heavy-duty truck is up to your daily drive, the 2023 Ford Super Duty or GMC Sierra HD? Our comparison guide takes a closer look at everything these powerful workhorses have to offer, from their huge diesel engines to high-tech, work-friendly features.
Price: It’s (Almost) a Tie!
As of this writing, Ford hasn’t exactly announced an MSRP for its heavy-duty truck lineup. However, last year’s model started at $39,445, so we can only hope that the upcoming truck will have an option that’s as affordable. Meanwhile, the 2023 GMC Sierra HD is only a little more expensive, with an MSRP that starts at $42,700. Keep in mind that these prices may change.
Powertrain Options: 2023 Ford Super Duty
This year, the Super Duty is rolling out a new standard engine. It’s bigger than the outgoing standard gas-powered V8, and we expect it to be more powerful, too. Ford will also offer a brand new high-output version of its turbo-diesel V8 engine, which we expect to provide best-in-class torque. Each engine will be paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, and all but the base XL model come with standard four-wheel drive. (This traction-boosting performance gear is optional for the XL.)
- Newly standard 6.8L gas-powered V8
- 7.3L gas-powered V8
- 6.7L turbo-diesel V8
- High-output 6.7L turbo-diesel V8
We do know that the GMC Sierra HD will offer two powerful engine options. Both are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission that powers the rear wheels, though four-wheel drive is also available. But, like we said, the Sierra HD is very unlikely to offer more power than the Ford Super Duty. And GMC’s two engines don’t give you nearly as much versatility.
- Standard 6.6L gas-powered V8 (401 hp, 464 lb-ft)
- Optional Duramax diesel 6.6L V8 (448 hp, 910 lb-ft)
Maximum Capabilities: 2023 Ford Super Duty
Once again, we’re at a slight impasse. Ford hasn’t announced the all-new Super Duty’s towing and hauling capabilities. But we expect them to be equal or greater to the figures we saw in the 2022 model, which easily outclass the Sierra HD.
- Max tow rating: 37,000 lbs
- Max payloads: 7,850 lbs
Although it’s not quite as powerful, the GMC Sierra HD is pretty capable in its own right. But, as you can see, it will force you to make more trips when you’re hauling truckloads of heavy gear.
- Max tow rating: 36,000 lbs
- Max payloads: 7,442 lbs
Modern Features: 2023 Ford Super Duty
The redesigned Super Duty is rolling out a long list of innovative tech features, including an onboard scale that will estimate your cargo weight. A new trailer-friendly navigation system will guide you down a route that avoids low bridges or impossibly tight turns. The new Super Duty also offers smartphone-friendly upgrades, with more USB ports and the SYNC 4 infotainment system, which includes a 12-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and up to three years of Amazon Alexa connectivity.
Meanwhile, the GMC Sierra HD’s comfort and tech lineup will look more familiar and a little less innovative. Like the Super Duty trucks (and other competitors), the Sierra HD offers every comfort, from heated seats to leather upholstery. And every trim model includes touchscreen infotainment and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. However, you won’t find the same level of work-friendly tech features on this GMC pickup.
Your New Heavy-Duty Truck
In the end, the all-new 2023 Ford Super Duty outclasses the competition with its massive engine options, incredible towing and hauling capabilities, and exclusive tech features!
