The Rundown
Buying a new vehicle has always been scary for consumers and by now we all know how significantly the price drops from the second we drive it out of the lot. This is where knowledge becomes power and knowing exactly which generation of vehicle you want to purchase is extremely important. The Ford Expedition has not been around as long as other cars, but there are a few generations that can be found as used vehicles. We are going to look at the current and past two generations of Expeditions and go over what you can expect from the used car group.
Current Generation 2018 – Present
The Ford Expedition has matured since its birth back in 1997 and focuses more on comfort and luxury than ever before. Family SUVs as a class have come to focus more on the passengers and style, which makes even the entry level SUVs feel more like luxury cars. To compete in this market, upper trims of the current generation of the Ford Expedition come packed with baubles and goodies, making the top tier Ford Expedition feel more like a Lincoln. Although the current generation has the best gas mileage as compared to older generations, compared to others in its class, the Expedition performs favorably and outcompetes the other vehicles.
Third Generation 2007 – 2017
The third generation started to look boxier, and developed a stronger frame, and platform which enabled the Ford Expedition to have the longer version that gave it more cargo space, and significantly larger rear side windows. The engines went largely unchanged throughout this generation due to a decrease of sales and interest from the recession in 2008. Eventually in 2015 Ford replaced the standard V8 with their new EcoBoost engine with six cylinders. This bolstered sales with the increased gas mileage. This generation retains more modern interior creature comforts and a mix of some early 2000s vehicle flair.
Second Generation 2003 – 2006
Significantly different than the first generation of the Ford Expedition. This SUV still retains a lot of the curves and round body style popular during the 2000s, but this is when Ford first began to add luxury and upscale options to the Ford Expedition lineup. This generation was the first generation to use an independent rear suspension, this enabled the expedition to have more space and comfort in the rear. This curvaceous beauty is sure to be a great family hauler while not breaking the bank. Models at this size can be found for extremely competitive prices, some not yet breaking 60,000 miles.
Summary
The Ford Expedition is a world class family hauler. With plenty of space in the normal sized Expedition, the large versions add more space than one family can handle. This SUV is built Ford Tough and comes with every Ford goodie that Ford has to offer. Each year offers a fantastic Ford vehicle that can get you and your family around town in style.
