The Rundown
The Ford Super Duty has been one of the favorite working trucks in America for the past few years. This reliable heavy-duty truck has improved year after year. Ford continues to listen to consumers to provide the best truck, and the Super Duty makes any job much easier. Through this buying guide we provide the details of past generations of the Super Duty and what are the best and worst features about each generation.
The Original Generation from 1998 to 2007
The first generation of the Super Duty came with characteristic 90s flair and powerful engines. A couple of the engines offered on the train were the 5.4 L Triton V8 gas engine, with 255 horses and 350 pound-feet of torque. The other engine was a 7.3 liter turbo diesel V-8 with 235 horses and class best 500 lb-ft of torque. These early iterations of the Super Duty are incredibly durable, reliable and do well on and off road. The main downside to this early generation of Super Duties is that they do like to use up gasoline, and do not have the best fuel economy. During this generation the F-550 was present, and unfortunately is no longer present on the current generation. The rear doors also offered rear hinges for the first time on any F-series truck.
The Second Generation from 2008 - 2010
The second generation of the Ford Super Duty introduced a more modern hard work truck. The engines all carried over but a Powerstroke diesel V-8 that had 610 lb-ft rating was introduced. Beyond that most of the updates were cosmetic, a welcome upgrade from the previous generation. This generation also featured a Harley Davidson trim unique to the Super Duty and came as a limited edition. Automatic and manual transmissions were available, but unfortunately the Super Duty continued to have limited fuel economy.
Third Generation from 2011 to 2016
This generation lasted more years than most for good reason. The generation received an updated exterior and interior, with upgrades to the interior options and power available. The standard gas engine was upgraded to a 6.2 L V8 with 385 horses and 405 lb.-ft of torque. The next level 6.7-liter turbodiesel engine started with 390 horses but was quickly upgraded to 400 horses and 800-pound feet of torque. The Powerstroke diesel also was upgraded during this time, to 440 horses and 860 lb-ft of torque. This generation we lost the manual transmission as Ford opted to go with an automatic transmission across the lineup.
Fourth Generation 2017- 2022
This generation offers more modern options than all of the other previous generations. This generation received an upgraded aluminum alloy that reduced the curb weight of the Super Duty and improved its hauling abilities. It underwent a couple redesigns for these model years, and most of the changes to the Ford Super Duty were cosmetic. It did receive more off-roading specific trims and enabled the consumer to take the Super Duty to the high desert with the Tremor trim. The main upgrade was the fat shedding of the Super Duty, which drastically improved fuel economy and hauling capabilities.
Current Generation 2023 – and beyond
The current generation we cannot consider used by any means, but it does offer plenty of upgrades that make the new generation of the Super Duty worth the all-new price. It offers the best-in-class towing engine, although those figures have not yet been released. Beyond restructuring the engines offered, the Super Duty received a modern interior and added functionality with side vents and an improved truck bed.
Summary
The Ford Super Duty is the best working truck on the market, and offers a variety of trims and power. This truck is reliable and will make the best addition to any job site, and will make hauling any large items very easy.
