Throughout its run as a dependable pickup, the Tundra has always delivered impressive V8 powertrains and a wealth of passenger space. But these trucks have seen some changes over the years—and there are some changes you should know about before you start shopping.
Third Generation: 2014-Current Model
Third Generation: 2014-Current Model
This updated pickup truck retains its strong points from the previous generation: robust V8 engines, the giant CrewMax cabin, and the spacious double cab with traditional real doors. To this tried-and-true formula, Toyota adds new styling and high-tech smartphone services to bring the Tundra into a new era of truck driving.
The Tundra got a major update for the 2014 model year, which is easy to spot, thanks to new interior and exterior styling. Toyota also added some new technology for this generation, including safety-enhancing blind-spot monitoring and rearview camera features.
If you’re looking for the off-road-friendly TRD Pro model, look for it starting with the 2015 model year, when it made its debut. Its awesome capabilities stem from its robust range of hardware, from Bilstein shock absorbers to off-road tires.
For 2016, a trailer brake controller became standard, giving drivers optimal control, even with heavy loads in tow. The same year, the SR5 and 1794 Edition rolled out new exterior designs. Tundras from the higher end of the trim spectrum also introduced a larger gas tank.
Second Generation: 2007-2013
These used Toyota Tundra pickups are sturdy options. Like any good Toyota, these trucks are known for their durability and reliability. Besides passenger-friendly cabins and strong engines, standout features include the gigantic CrewMax cabin option with sliding and reclining rear seats, a standard rearview camera, and impressive smartphone integration.
If you’re trying to make the most of your tow and haul game, you should note that trucks from 2007 until the 2009 model year featured a less-powerful, 4.7-liter V8 engine that limited you to 271 horsepower. In 2010, that engine was replaced by a 4.6-liter V8 that boosted output to 310 horsepower.
From 2007 through the end of this generation, a 4-liter V6 was on offer. This engine was designed to increase fuel economy without taking away from the Tundra’s sturdy truck performance. The V6 initially produced 236 horsepower, but output increased to 270 horses for the 2011 model year and onward.
