We’re going to come right out and say it: the 2022 Ford EcoSport starts $10,000 less than a similarly equipped Ford Edge. For you cautious folks out there, that raises some red flags. What’s wrong with the EcoSport? They’re both sports utility vehicles, right? Why the big price difference? Not to worry. The EcoSport is a great vehicle, but this subcompact lives in a different class than the Ford Edge, which accounts for the price difference. We’ll spell it all out in this comparison guide between the 2022 Ford EcoSport and the Ford Edge.
SIZE: 2022 FORD EDGE
The elephant in the room is the matter of size. The 2022 Ford EcoSport is a subcompact sport utility vehicle. You almost can’t find an SUV smaller than this. Meanwhile, the Edge is a beefier, burlier mid-size SUV. Four inches taller, six inches wider, and over a foot longer. The Edge weighs almost 4,000 pounds compared to 3,000 pounds on the EcoSport.
How does that affect you? Well, inside the cabin you’ll find more passenger space in the Ford Edge, just not in the front seat. That’s right, the 2022 EcoSport has a few tenths of an inch more front legroom than the bigger Edge. But the Edge makes up for it with a whopping four inches more legroom in the back seat. If you regularly drive with adults back there, they will thank you. If it’s just kids and car seats, you might not bother shelling out more for the Edge.
Of course, you also get more cargo space with the Edge, to the tune of 39.2 cubic feet behind the back seat compared to the Ford EcoSport’s 20.9 cubes in back. If you have a ton of gear to haul, the Edge might be a better fit for you and your stuff.
FUEL ECONOMY: 2022 FORD ECOSPORT
Naturally, the lighter EcoSport is going to economize gasoline better. While we don’t have official EPA ratings out yet, we can safely assume that the Ecosport will probably be the most impressive. As a refresher, the 2019 EcoSport got 27 city miles and 27 highway miles per gallon and the 2019 Ford Edge got 22 city and 29 highway mpg. That’s actually really good for a mid-size SUV, but the Edge cannot compete with the smaller EcoSport. If you drive through congested traffic to get to work, that city mpg is going to take its toll on your gas tank and your wallet.
STANDARD FEATURES: 2022 FORD EDGE
There’s another very good reason why the Ford EcoSport starts at around $20,000 while the Edge starts at about $32,000. In addition to its bigger size, the Edge also comes with a lot more standard features. You be the judge whether or not these are worth the price for you. The 2022 Ford EcoSport comes with cloth upholstery (faux-leather in some trims), four-way manually adjustable front seats, MyKey, rearview camera, and SYNC system with 4.2-inch display screen, two USB ports, and six-speaker audio system.
On the other front, the 2022 Ford Edge comes with the same features, but adds 18-inch alloy wheels and all-season tires, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, rain-sensing wipers, satellite radio, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi hotspot, in addition to a number of extra safety features in Ford’s Co-Pilot suite. Of course, all these features can be yours on the EcoSport for less money overall.
So, is the 2022 Ford Edge worth that extra ten grand? You decide.
